Chief of the Wilds

The fearsome dragon Smaug is dead, and his vast trove of treasure is ripe for the taking. The Wild Wolf Clan of the Misty Mountains has arrived along side the Goblin Horde of Moria to seize the spoils before any petulant dwarves can lay claim to this fortune! _______________________________________________________________________ Deck Description: This is an aggro Golgari deck, with the goal of going both wide and tall. The commander "Chief of the Wilds" is the cornerstone to it's strategy, focusing on its ability to rapidly grow larger as more wolves ETB. Ferocious is the primary deck theme, as many cards have mechanics that benefit from having a high power creature on the battlefield. Fill up your battlefield quickly with your pack of wolves, then make huge payoffs with your high-powered Chief. Relentlessly assail your opponents until you're the last army standing! _______________________________________________________________________ Preface: As TCC has designed precons for the Dwarves, Elves, and Goblins, I thought it was most appropriate to design this precon around one of the other 2 remaining armies- the men or the wolves, and I chose the latter. Although the commander's ability doubles Battle triggers, I decided not to include any of the currently printed battles as I felt none were either mechanically or flavorfully viable for this deck. Hopefully the co-op kit will print some much better suited Battles. Also, I tried my best to maintain a similar budget to the TCC Hobbit precons and appropriate flavor within this deck, excluding some very expensive and high-power options for more flavorful and budget-friendly alternatives. It was so much fun to build this, I hope you enjoy! _______________________________________________________________________ __________________________Themes & Mechanics: _________________________ Ramp: Torgal, A Fine Hound was an easy mana-dork choice as it is a low cost wolf that can trigger the Chief, and it incidentally gives major buffs to the handful of humans found in this deck! Whisperer of the Wilds taps for double mana when you have Ferocious, which is online as soon as you have the Chief on the battlefield. Selvala, Heart of the Wilds is a powerhouse of mana generation as she taps for mana equal to the power of your rapidly growing commander (and she has a wolf in her art!). Song of Freyalise allows your wolf pack to work together to summon even more wolves (and grants them a huge attack bonus when it finishes). Summon: Fenrir benefits from the Chief's double trigger by ramping 2 lands when played. And Traverse the Outlands has a tremendous payoff when coupled with the Chief to easily ramp out almost all of the basic lands in the deck! _______________________________________________________________________ Card Advantage: Herd Heirloom not only works as mana ramp, but also enables your commander to swing in with trample damage and draw you a card every turn. Hollowmurk Siege and Terrasymbiosis keep your hand full every time you put counters on the Chief, and can draw you even more when you flash in wolves on your opponents turn. The Chief Warg draws multiple cards when you attack, as the trigger is doubled by your commander. Owlbear Shepard and Colossal Majesty are budget friendly card-draw permanents that reward you for having a high power creature. And in-line with the aggro strategy, Ohran Frostfang enables your Wolves to swing in hard and draw many cards. Hunter's Insight, Return of the Wildspeaker, and Season of Gathering all allow for massive card draw payoffs with your buffed up commander, and can also enable some hard-hitting attacks. _______________________________________________________________________ Evasion: A crucial part of the aggro strategy. As with a few of the cards discussed above, cards like Sphere Grid and Howlpack Resurgence enable your creatures with trample, allowing you to swing in for commander damage with ease. Cover of Darkness allows your wolves to bypass most defenses, and thematically reminds me of the blacked out sky during the battle in The Hobbit. And a pet favorite card of mine in the deck- Roar of Challenge can used versatilely to knock out an opponent. When used on your commander, its high power can wipe out most of an opponents board, while allowing your wolf pack to hit their life total directly. Or when used on a lesser wolf, it allows your commander to evade your opponents defenses and hit for lethal commander damage. And the enchantment Alpha Authority not only provides the Chief with hexproof protection, but also overlaps with the Chiefs menace ability to make it unblockable. _______________________________________________________________________ Summoning the Wolf Pack: The deck is full of as many cheap and/or effective Wolf creatures as possible. Low cost wolves like Ascendant Packleader, Nighthowl Pursuer, and Young Wolf allow for cheap triggers of your commanders ability. Bejeweled Warg, Metallic Mimic, and Ravening Warg are low cost wolves that also benefit from the aggressive strategy. Mana cost reducers like Emerald Medallion, Honest Rutstein, and Cemetery Prowler allow you to quickly and efficiently cast as many wolves as possible. Kindred Summons is a fantastic spell for filling the battlefield with wolves at instant speed, and hulking out your commander at the same time. And token generators like Chief Warg's Company, Ferocious Pup, Howling Moon, Head of the Hunt, Silverfur Partisan, and Feed the Pack flood the battlefield with wolves and grow the Chief to a ridiculous power level (with token generation often doubled by the Chiefs 2nd ability). Hollowhenge Overlord is the MVP here, when flashed in on your opponents end step, it will quadruple your wolves on your upkeep. _______________________________________________________________________ Removal: Feed the Swarm and Gnashing of Teeth are powerful removal spells that are very flavorful for this deck. Moonlight Hunt is an obvious choice as it works perfectly with the Wolf kindred synergy. Assassin's Trophy and Tear Asunder are effective for general nonland permanent removal. And Inscription Abundance is extremely versatile removal spell, as it can also provide more +1/+1 counters and/or provide a high life gain payoff. _______________________________________________________________________ Lifegain: Packsong Pup and Ravening Warg are more low cost wolves that provide life gain bonuses. Reverent Howl has the potential to provide a huge life gain payoff when used on your commander. And Flourishing Hunter, while on it's own is a mostly unplayable common, but when combined with the Chief it provides a massive life gain equal to double your commanders already high toughness. _______________________________________________________________________ Lands: 2 MDFCs are included (for a total of 37 lands) Bridgeworks Battle allows for easy removal when fighting your commander, and Revitalizing Repast can protect your commander in a pinch. Bonder's Enclave and Mosswort Bridge can easily be activated with the Ferocious theme. Oran Rief and Mirkwood assist with the +1/+1 counters subtheme. And Rogue's passage can enable a commander damage finish when necessary. _______________________________________________________________________ Finishers: Along with the evasion cards discussed above, cards like Kindred Dominance clears the way for your wolves to swing in. Unnatural Growth consistently pumps your wolves for an onslaught. Overwhelming Stampede buffs all of your lesser wolves with the Chiefs power to wipe out your opponents in one swing. Unable to attack with your commander? Cast Essence Harvest and drain your opponents life equal to the chiefs high power.
